Stephen Smith’s announcement on US troops to be stationed in Australia
Media Release 15 September 2011
The annual AUSMIN talks between the Defence and Foreign Ministers of the United States and Australia are currently taking place in San Francisco.
At their conclusion Defence Minister Stephen Smith is expected to announce a major escalation in stationing United States troops in this country, expanded ship and plane visits and increased military exercises, focussing on the western coast of Australia.
The announcement is expected to provoke considerable concern in political and defence academic circles and the Australian peace movement.
With 30 years of research and campaigning, working in Australia and alongside anti-bases organisations worldwide, the Australian Anti-Bases Campaign is uniquely placed to comment on the political, security and economic implications of the Labor Government’s expansion of military ties with the US.
