Opening salvo against Talisman Sabre

Rockhampton Barracks Peace Vigil

Date: Friday June 10, 2005 Time: 5pm - 7pm Where: Western Street, Rockhampton

With banners and drums, peace campaigners will picket the Rockhampton military barracks (tent city), tonight at 5pm.

The barracks now house thousands of troops in preparation for the Australia - US joint military exercise Operation Talisman Sabre.

Protestors from around the country are gathering for a weekend of activity to call for an end to US bases and war games and building more positive and constructive relationships with other countries.

"We have nothing against these young men and women", said Dr Hannah Middleton from the Anti-Bases Campaign.

"We are concerned that the ADF is not being used for defense of our land and our people. The role is being distorted by the decisions being made in Canberra and Washington. Practicing invading other countries undermine the security of Australia, our region and the world."

Several dozen peace campaigners from Brisbane are set to arrive in Rockhampton in time to join local and other inter-state activists for the vigil.

A six metre long "Anti-nuclear" missile launched from the Sunshine Coast on Thursday has landed in Rockhampton and will be displayed at the Friday night vigil.

A list of scheduled Peace Convergence events follow. Others TBA.

The Peace Convergence involves various peace, anti-nuclear, and environmental organisations.
