Peace Protest at Richmond RAAF Base The Pine Gap, Richmond, Iraq connection
"Surveys show that a majority of Australians are convinced that we should not be involved in the Iraq war," Denis Doherty, spokesperson for Australian Anti-Bases Campaign Coalition Campaign (AABCC), said today.
"Our protest today is the beginning of a campaign to alert people that the hosting of Pine Gap, the spy base for the US near Alice Springs, is far more important than Australian troops in Iraq.
"Pine Gap supplies targets and intelligence for the United States in its invasion and occupation of Iraq," Mr Doherty said.
"We chose this site for a peace action because Richmond RAAF base hosts a detachment of the USAF Air Mobility Command (AMC). The AMC flies supplies to the US base at Pine Gap.
"We have chosen today to act because the trial is currently under way in Alice Springs of four brave Christian protesters who broke into Pine Gap in order to expose the war crimes it make Australia complicit in," Mr Doherty said.
Dr Middleton from the Global Network Against Weapons in Space said:
"Our protest today is also part of a week of actions world wide opposing US plans to militarise and commercially exploit space, to make the US the 'master of space', and to control and dominate space and from it the Earth below.
"But space belongs to us all," Dr Middleton said.
"It should be used for peaceful purposes and for the economic, scientific and cultural benefit of all countries and peoples."
